Troubleshooting and Preventive Measures for Water Accumulation in Injection Molding Machine Oil Tanks

Water accumulation in the oil tanks of injection molding machines is a common hydraulic hazard in workshops. When moisture enters the hydraulic oil, it causes emulsification, turning the oil whitish and foamy; it leads to valve body rusting and jerky or stuttering machine movements. In severe cases, it accelerates the aging and damage of oil pumps and seals, thereby compromising stable equipment operation.

I. Main causes of water accumulation in the fuel tank

1.Condensation accumulation due to temperature difference

The workshop experiences significant day-night temperature fluctuations as well as high temperatures and humidity; during the oil tank's breathing process, moist air is drawn in and condenses into water droplets on the inner walls, which accumulate over time and settle at the bottom of the tank.

2. Cooling water leakage

Internal damage to the hydraulic cooler and perforation of the water nozzle, allowing cooling water to seep into the oil circuit, are the primary causes of significant water accumulation.

3. Device in long-term standby mode

Excessive downtime and low oil temperatures make it easier for moisture to condense and accumulate, exacerbating the problem of water buildup.

4. Water ingress due to improper maintenance

Inadequate protective measures during oil changes or maintenance involving opening the cover allowed atmospheric moisture and external water to enter the oil tank.

II. Rapid Troubleshooting Methods

Observe the hydraulic oil for signs of whitening, turbidity, or foaming; open the drain port at the bottom of the reservoir to periodically drain and check for water.
Monitor the water inlet and outlet pressures of the cooler to check for internal leaks; inspect the reservoir breather to ensure it has not failed due to moisture.

 

III. Measures for Handling Accumulated Water

Minor water accumulation: Drain from the bottom, replace precision filter elements, and circulate heated oil to evaporate moisture.
Severe emulsification: Completely drain the old oil, clean the reservoir, flush the piping, replace all filter elements and aged seals, and refill with fresh hydraulic oil.

 

IV. Preventive Measures

Drain the bottom regularly; replace with a high-quality waterproof breather; periodically check the cooler for leaks; avoid prolonged low-temperature standby; and increase the frequency of oil quality inspections during humid seasons.

 

Properly carrying out routine waterproofing, drainage, and inspection tasks can effectively prevent water accumulation in the oil tank, stabilize hydraulic system pressure, and reduce the equipment failure rate.
