Workshops handling small-batch, multi-order production frequently face urgent customer requests to prioritize specific orders. Rashly interrupting existing production schedules can trigger a chain reaction of issues, such as mold-change losses, a backlog of work-in-progress (WIP) inventory, delays to original orders, and increased machine setup time. By employing tiered assessment, flexible scheduling, advance preparation of supporting resources, and process constraints, workshops can mitigate the capacity fluctuations caused by these rush orders and stabilize the overall delivery cadence.

1. Establish a tiered review mechanism for urgent orders to prevent the arbitrary insertion of orders

 First, establish entry thresholds for queue-jumping requests to prevent situations where every single request is treated as urgent.

 

Prioritization: Orders involving payment deductions and essential orders from key clients are designated as high priority; for standard rush requests, the aim is to coordinate within existing delivery schedules rather than simply cutting the queue.

 

Conduct a comprehensive assessment before inserting an order: calculate mold changeover time, verify raw material availability, check mold condition, and estimate the duration of machine occupancy.

Avoid scheduling rush orders on primary machines that are currently engaged in long-running, stable mass production, handling products with complex mold setup requirements, or processing large batches.
